Mother’s Day has been a wonderful time to have a portrait of happy families with Mom. I’ve just completed a Mother’s Day street Mobile studio shoot here in Melbourne Australia. The alpha wireless strobes setup helped in simplifying the shoot. Space was certainly a constrain but all went well. Here is a shot taken of the “operations” in the field. Note the white line on the floor that marks out the working area.
Thanks to the easy and quick deployment of the Alpha flash with the Photoflex LiteDome XS we are able to overcome the space constraint. Also thanks to the little TWIP BOUNCE on the HVL-F20AM that ensured 100% firing of all the strobes on wireless.

Coming up soon…..a short tutorial on how Automobile photography could be achieved with Sony Alpha wireless flash system and Photoflex XS combo.
An urgent need for a ring-light type of lighting came up last night. I had to think of a way to get the shot with the right lighting that I need. No other choice, I had to rig-up a home made ring-light diffuser for use with my 100mm f2.8 macro lens. Well, the final product was good and I thought it would be a good sharing write-up. I basically use the HVL-F20AM as the light source with it off camera.
Here is the finished product mounted on the 100mm f2.8 macro lens:
The whole ring flash diffuser rig in a self portrait into the mirror – suitable for macro and close range portraits with the 100mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.4 lens.
Take a step further with your Alpha strobes and use them with some of the common tools in the photography scene. I’m personally using the Alpha strobes with the Photoflex LiteDome XS for my on-location mobile studio assignments at MOBISTUDIOS. Where speed and space is limited – the Alpha flashes gets into the front line. I will be posting a short write-up on how I personally use the Alpha Flashes + Photoflex LiteDome XS. For a start, here’s a list of items that I use for each head setup:
- Lite Dome XS by Photoflex (Kit) – one set per flash head
- Flash Stand that comes with the alpha flash heads
- Mini Ball-head – I personally use a bunch of Giottos MH-1003
- Light stand for off camera (Typically utilizing wireless flashing)
One great thing about the Litedome XS Kit is in the size and its flexibility for your own configuration. I can have the setup pre-assembled for quick deployment. Coupling the strength of this diffusers and the strength of the Alpha wireless flash, its a great professional tool for you to consider.
I have been getting queries on how the HVL-F20AM would be used. Well, I guess its high time I post information to answer those day to day queries as I go along. Here is a diagram on how the little cute flash is to be used on …I believe all future alpha DSLR bodies that would come without pop-up flashes – just like our A900.
Its a very simple setup that now possible without having to use the HVL-F58AM to trigger other flashes. One thing I personally love is the weight. I do not have to carry the camera+grip with lens on and another big flash on board to trigger other remote flashes in a studio or event.
Finally, alphastrobist contents have moved to WordPress. This will allow some level of real time queries to help out new fellow Alpha system users. Its really an exciting months ahead with the introduction of the new HVL-F20AM compact and lightweight flash unit. Its really going to be a hit with those wanting to have a higher guide numbered flash to carry along and at the same time not too heavy or large. Its a cute little flash unit that have been long anticipated. Well, its really an addition to the Sony A900 – which does not have any built-in flash.
Hopefully, we could get some level of contributions and knowledge sharing within this site in the knowledge base of Sony dedicated flash system and accessories and also third party alternatives that may be of great use too. We are now running some actual shoots with the HVL-F20AM and also trying out several ways this little flash could be better utilised.
Stay tuned. And do check back for some new info or news.
We have finally secured a unit of the HVL-F20AM. Do check back for our in-depth user review!!
